The clip is from the Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors, season 1, episode 8, where Jon Hamm's character, a divorced former hedge fund manager, ends up alone in a nightclub, eyes shut, completely lost in the music. The edits pair it with Kato's "Turn the Lights Off", a Danish house track featuring singer Jon Nørgaard. That isn't the song in the actual episode; it was added by the people who made the meme, and it stuck.
The format is "me when..." plus a small win: me when the meeting gets cancelled, me after one coffee, me when the code finally runs. Hamm's blissed-out face does the rest. Hamm himself has called becoming a meme "mystifying".
The existing "Jon Hamm dancing meme template" files on CapCut and similar apps are the original scene for you to add text on top of. They can't put your face in it. Prompt-based AI generators can, but it takes a good prompt and several tries to get the slow sway and closed eyes right. The template already has the scene and the timing, so you only bring the photo.
If you meant "how to do the turn the lights off trend" with your own camera: dim the room, close your eyes, sway slowly with your arms low and a slight head tilt, and add the sound plus your "me when" caption. For the AI version, a clear front-facing photo of your face works best; slicked-back or short hair looks closest to the original. ReelMe isn't affiliated with Jon Hamm, Apple TV+ or Kato.
